General Privacy Policy
Protecting your personal data is of utmost importance to us. Below we will explain our data protection practices in the use of our electronic media.
The General Privacy Policy applies to all websites operated by F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH. A notification with respect to whether a website belongs to the F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH portfolio can be found in the imprint of the respective website.
F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH collects, processes and uses your personal data solely in compliance with the currently applicable data protection regulations. Specific provisions are contained among other things in the EU General Data Protection Act (GDPR) and the German Telemedia Act (TMG).
When using the digital products and services of F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH (hereinafter also referred to as “we”), the following data are collected:
- Personal data which you enter voluntarily when you register for a newsletter or an event, place an order, take part in a survey, participate in discussion forums, or use similar services offered through our websites.
- Tracking information which is collected while our websites are being used.
Collection, processing and use of personal data
Without further consent, the personal data which you provide will be only stored, processed and used for these purposes, to the extent that they are required for the conclusion and execution of the contract, as well as for invoicing purposes. The data will only be passed on to service providers who execute the respective tasks (mail shots, etc.) on behalf of F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH for the fulfilment of these specified purposes. The service providers in their turn are contractually obliged to confidentiality and compliance with all requisite data protection measures. F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA guarantees that your data will be treated confidentially.
After you provide your voluntary consent, F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH is authorised to collect, process and store your personal data, combine them with other data, archive them and use them for the purpose of supplying information about F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH products. You can grant your consent either in writing or by clicking on the relevant declaration. In particular, your personal data will only be passed on to Third Parties if you have given specific prior consent or if we are obliged to release the data because of an official order.
The collection, processing and use of personal data occurs specifically in the following cases:
- Newsletters:
Newsletters are available on subscription on some F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH websites. After registration, the user’s email address and personal data are stored on the F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH server. The data are utilised exclusively to send the subscribed newsletters. The user must consent to other provisions.
After registration, the user will receive a confirmation message containing a link to complete registration (double opt-in). This ensures that the newsletter is explicitly desired.
F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA uses “CleverReach” email marketing software.
Email marketing with consent
On our websites or as part of special offers, you have the opportunity to order a newsletter or consent to the receipt of information about our products and services. The type of personal data we collect in this regard derives from the form used in registration.
After registration, you will first receive an email which you must confirm via the link it contains (double opt-in). The purpose of this process is to verify whether the owner of the email address provided during registration has consented to receiving email marketing messages. The date and the time of the confirmation are stored by our company. The legal basis for storing these data is our legal obligation to document your consent (Art. 6 Par. 1 Sentence Point c) GDPR, Art 7 Par. 1 GDPR).
If you do not confirm your registration, your data will be deleted again. Furthermore, data collected during registration (email address and voluntary information) will also be deleted as soon as they are no longer necessary to achieve the purpose for which they were collected. This applies in particular after withdrawal of your consent (e.g. if you cancel your subscription to a newsletter).
The legal basis for processing your data for the purpose of regularly sending you email marketing is your consent (Art. 6 Par. 1 Sentence Point a) GDPR).
You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future. To do this, please send a message to datenschutz@faz-bm.de or use the cancellation function in the email.
Email marketing without consent
If you have given us your email address when you purchased a product or a service from us, we will process this email address for the purpose of sending information about such products and services which are similar to products and services which you have already purchased or which correspond – if you have disclosed these – to your interests.
The legal basis for processing is Art. 6 Par. 1 Sentence Point f) GDPR. Because of the existing customer relationship, the use of your data for further sales is reasonably foreseeable and your fundamental rights and freedoms are not affected by the receipt of email marketing to an extent that your interest in a desistance of processing would outweigh.
You can object to the processing of your data at any time with effect for the future without incurring any costs other than the transmission costs at basic rates. To do this, please send a message to datenschutz@faz-bm.de or use the cancellation function in the email.
- Events:
You can register for events on the F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH event websites. After registration, the user’s personal data which are relevant for the event are stored on the F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH server. The data are utilised exclusively to hold the event. The user must consent to other provisions.
After registration, the user will receive a confirmation message containing all information relevant for the event. - Personalised data:
If you decide to avail of services which require registration, we will collect, process and use the respective data from you which we require to provide the services.
Right to access
Upon request, F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH will advise in writing whether and which personal data are stored, taking legal requirements into account.
Please direct enquiries to datenschutz@faz-bm.de.
Changes to data and withdrawal
You can update, correct, supplement or delete the personal data relating to you at any time.
Should this not be technically feasible at the address at which you provided us with the data, you have the option to reach us in this regard at any time at the following email address:
This email address can also be accessed for withdrawals of consent that you had granted for the use of your data. In this case, your data will be deleted immediately. If data had been transmitted to Third Parties with your consent, these Third Parties will be immediately informed and requested to delete the data. You have the right to limit your consent to the use of your data. Then a deletion will only occur within the scope of the limitation.
For technical reasons, it cannot be completely excluded that an overlap occurs between the withdrawal and the use of your data within the scope of a marketing campaign that had already begun.
Website tracking
F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH automatically collects and stores information which the user’s browser transmits to the F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH server in its server log files.
These are:
Browser type / version
Operating system used
Referrer URL (the previously visited page)
Host name of the accessing device
Time of the server request.
These data cannot be attributed to individual persons by F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH. They are used solely for statistical analysis and for the improvement of our products and services by providing information about the use of the websites run by F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH.
Google Analytics
Our websites use Google Analytics, a web analytics service supplied by our service provider Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA (“Google”). Google Analytics uses cookies which are stored on your computer and which enable an analysis of your use of the website. The information generated by the cookies about your use of the website are generally transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there. However, by activating the IP anonymisation on our websites, your IP address will be truncated beforehand by Google and thus anonymised within European Union Member States or in other countries which are contracting parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be transmitted to a Google server in the USA and truncated there (https://policies.google.com/privacy?hl=de).
Google has submitted to the EU Privacy Shield (Certificate can be accessed at: https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt000000001L5AAI). Following an EU Commission decision, the EU Privacy Shield can be used as a basis for transferring personal data from Europe to those US companies which have been certified under the Privacy Shield.
Google uses this information on our behalf to analyse your use of the website, to compile reports about website activities and to provide further associated services for us in connection with website use and internet use. Using the statistics obtained, we can improve our products and services and make them more interesting to you as a user (Art. 6 Par. 1 Point f) GDPR).
You can prevent the gathering of the data generated by the cookie and pertaining to your use of the website (incl. your truncated IP address) as well as the processing of these data by Google by downloading and installing the browser plugin provided at the following link:
Newsletter tracking
We would like to draw your attention to the fact that we analyse the behaviour of our email newsletter readers. For this analysis, the emails we send out contain what are known as web beacons or tracking pixels. These web beacons or tracking pixels are one-pixel graphic files which are stored on our websites. To conduct the analysis, we link the web beacons or tracking pixels to your email address and an individual ID.
We use the data gathered in this process to create a user profile to align the newsletter to your individual interests. For this purpose, when you read the newsletter, we record which links you click on in the newsletter and draw conclusions from them about your personal interests. We link these data to the actions you have performed on our websites. The purpose of this processing is to improve the quality of the newsletter and optimise our products and services.
The legal basis for the processing is Art. 6 Par. 1 Point f) GDPR.
This tracking will not take place if you have disabled images in your email programme as standard. In this case, the newsletter will not be displayed to you in its entirety and you may not be able to use all functions. Once you allow image display, the tracking described above will be activated.
Remarketing
The websites use the Google Inc. (“Google”) remarketing or “similar target groups” function. Using this function, visitors to the websites can be addressed individually with advertising by placing personalised, interest-based publicity advertisements for visitors to the websites when they visit other websites in the Google Display network. To conduct the analysis of website use, which forms the basis for generating interest-based publicity advertisements, Google uses what are known as cookies. For this purpose, Google stores a small file with a sequence of numbers into the browsers of the website visitors. Using this number, the visits to the website and anonymised data are collected about the use of the website. No storage of the website visitors’ personal data occurs. If you subsequently visit another website in the Google Display network, you will be shown advertisements that are highly likely to consider product or information segments that you had accessed previously.
You can permanently deactivate the use of cookies by Google by following the link below and downloading and installing the browser plugin provided there:
https://www.google.com/settings/ads/plugin?hl=de.
Alternatively, you can deactivate the use of cookies by Third Parties by accessing the deactivation page of the Network Advertising Initiative at http://www.networkadvertising.org/choices/ and carrying out the instructions for opting out explained in further detail there.
You can view further information on Google remarketing as well as Google’s Privacy Policy at: http://www.google.com/privacy/ads/.
When you access an F.A.Z. BUSINESS MEDIA GmbH website that contains a Facebook plugin, your browser sets up a direct connection to the Facebook servers. The content of the plugin is transmitted by Facebook to your browser and integrated into the website from there.
By integrating the plugin, Facebook receives the information that you have accessed the respective page of our internet presence. If you are logged in to Facebook, Facebook can match the visit to your Facebook account. If you interact with the plugins, for example by pressing the “Like” button or leaving a comment, the respective information will be transmitted directly from your browser to Facebook and stored there. Please refer to Facebook’s privacy notices regarding the purpose and scope of the data collection and the further processing and use of the data by Facebook, as well as your rights pertaining hereto and settings options to protect your privacy.
Facebook Custom Audience
On these websites, the “Custom Audience” function of our service provider Facebook Inc., 1601 South California Avenue, Palo Alto, CA 94304, USA (“Facebook”) is used (Art. 6 Par.1 Point f) GDPR). The purpose of this function is to present interest-based publicity advertisements (“Facebook ads”) to visitors to our websites during their visit to the Facebook social network. When you visit our webpages, a direct connection is set up between your browser and the Facebook server via the remarketing tags (pixels). As a result, Facebook receives the information that you have accessed our page using your IP address. This enables Facebook to match the visit to our pages to your Facebook user account. However, we do not transmit your personal data (name, email address, etc.). We and Facebook can use the information we receive in this process to display Facebook ads to you, in order to show you suitable advertisements based on our legitimate interest to finance our web presence.
Facebook has submitted to the EU Privacy Shield (Certificate can be accessed at: https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt0000000GnywAAC&status=Active). Following an EU Commission decision, the EU Privacy Shield can be used as a basis for transferring personal data from Europe to those US companies which have been certified under the Privacy Shield.
You will find further information on Facebook’s Data Policy page at https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/.
At the following link, you can prevent data collection via Facebook Custom Audience or the pixel: https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=ads#_=_. Alternatively, you can deactivate the Facebook pixel on the Digital Advertising Alliance page at the following link: http://www.aboutads.info/choices/.
Datawrapper
We use Datawrapper to visualise the results of data journalism research. Using Datawrapper’s embedding function, we integrate these visualisations into our website pages. See the Datawrapper Privacy Policy.
Hotjar
Our websites use the Hotjar Ltd. web analysis service Hotjar. Hotjar Ltd. is a European company with headquarters in Malta (Hotjar Ltd, Level 2, St Julians Business Centre, 3, Elia Zammit Street, St Julians STJ 1000, Malta, Tel.: +1 (855) 464-6788).
Using this tool, movements on the websites on which Hotjar is used can be traced (heatmaps). Thus, for example, it shows how far users scroll, which buttons they click on and how often. Furthermore, using the tool, feedback can also be obtained directly from the website users. Most importantly, the functionality of a Hotjar-based website can be improved by Hotjar services by making it more user-friendly, valuable and easier for the consumer to use.
When we use this tool, we make every effort to ensure your personal data are protected. Thus we can only trace which buttons are clicked, the path of the mouse, how far is scrolled down, the size of the device’s screen, the type of device and browser information, geographic location (only the country) and the preferred language around our website. Areas of the website in which your personal data or those of Third Parties are displayed are automatically hidden by Hotjar and thus are not traceable at any time. In order to exclude direct tracing to an individual, IP addresses are only stored and processed further after being anonymised. However, Hotjar uses various services from Third Party providers like Google Analytics and Optimizely. Thus, it can occur that these services collect data which are transmitted by your browser in the process of web page requests. These could be cookies, for example, or your IP address. In these exceptional cases, processing occurs pursuant to Art. 6 Par. 1 Point a) GDPR on the basis of the consent you granted for the purposes of statistical analysis of user behaviour for optimisation and marketing purposes.
Hotjar offers every user the option to prevent the use of the Hotjar tool using a “Do Not Track header”, so that no data are recorded about the visit to the respective website. This is a setting which all common browsers support in their current versions. To do this, your browser sends a request to Hotjar with the notification to deactivate the tracking of the respective user. If you use our websites on different browsers/devices, you must set up the “Do Not Track header” for each individual browser/device separately.
You can prevent Hotjar from collecting your data when you visit a Hotjar-based website at any time by going to the Hotjar opt-out page https://www.hotjar.com/legal/compliance/opt-out/ and deactivating Hotjar.
You will find further information about Hotjar Ltd. and about the Hotjar tool at:
